Common Risk Factors For Depression
Depression is among the most common mental health disorders and is caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, biological and psychological factors. And, while depression most commonly occurs in adults, children and teens also can experience the disorder. Depression among older adults can be a result of chronic health conditions including heart disease, cancer or diabetes. Risk factors for depression include:
- A family history of depression (genetics)
- Trauma or a history of violence, abuse or poverty
- Certain chemicals or structures in the brain
- Major life changes (death, divorce, job loss, etc.)
- Stress
- Low self-esteem
- Certain physical illnesses
- Drug and alcohol abuse
- Some medications
