Common Risk Factors For Depression

Depression is among the most common mental health disorders and is caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, biological and psychological factors. And, while depression most commonly occurs in adults, children and teens also can experience the disorder.   • A family history of depression (genetics)
  • Trauma or a history of violence, abuse or poverty
  • Certain chemicals or structures in the brain
  • Major life changes (death, divorce, job loss, etc.)
  • Stress
  • Low self-esteem
  • Certain physical illnesses
  • Drug and alcohol abuse
  • Some medications
